I ran synthetic in my Evo once. Never again. The motor was noisy and it weeped like crazy, everywhere. Flushed that crap out and went back to the Valvoline VR1 50W and all the weepiness was gone.
Ok, then do air cooled V twins require anything different in conventional oil than say a water cooled 4cyl?
I've been using Castrol MC oil in them any reason to change for the HD?
use motorcycle oil only its for air cooled engines
You don't need motorcycle only oil for a Harley Davidson. They don't use a shared sump and will benefit from a quality car oil with friction modifiers.

They need a high zinc content, much like a diesel truck. Spectro, H-D and Mobil are three brands that are very good.
I understand the Valvoline VR1 (pick your oil weight) also is high in zinc.
Correct. I run the 50w. The gentleman that recommended it to me had 150,000 miles on his 95 Dyna last time I spoke with him, and he hadn't been into the motor yet.
I run 20-50 Synthetic in my S&S motors as that is what they originally had in the manual to run in it. Never had a leak issue. Run the same in the 96" motor I built and no leaks on it either.
Guess I am luckier than the others here..
Synthetic 75-140 in the 6 speed tranny and Type "F" ATF in her primary.
I did use the Valvoline Racing oil in dino to break the 96" in as I do any motor I build.
