This is interesting to listen to as what is being said is the reason I am doing the work on my bike.
To me, once I hit 60 - 65, my bike feels like there is nothing or little left. While I have run at 70 - 75, the bike sounds, and feels, like it wants to explode, and that isn't a good feeling by any means.

Something is wrong with the "can't run 80 down the fwy"!
With my '89 Springer I ran 80-90 all thru the nite from the NorthWest to my home bed for 850+ miles. I did have a tail wind, which helped, but never thought about not having enough power for one second. My current bike runs 70 at 3100 rpm and has no problem running 80+ I actually have slowed way down now and usually just run 60-70 mph.

That is what mine used to feel like. The fix was fresh rings, .025 off the heads not only to increase compression but equalize the volume , dynatek ignition, EV13 cam, dynojet kit for the carbureter.
You also need a good exhaust system. Wide open pipes with no baffles or back pressure will significantly reduce the low end torque.
Now mine pulls like a tractor on the low end and is also happy to cruise along at interstate speeds and higher. It also runs remarkably smooth, especially for being a Softail.
At the time I thought a six speed was the solution but it turned out just the few items I mentioned made all the difference in the world.

Surprised to find so much enthusiasm for our "lowly" EVO's! I figured the "gotta have the newest/best" motorcycle crowd would squash this thread in a minute.
I was thinking about trading in my FXD for a new FXDL. 23 inches more does sound tempting, but after hearing all this, I just don't know! I do agree that the engine revs too fast for only mediocre speed. Then again, I drive a Z06 Vette, so I may be a little "scewwed."

I have a 1981 Corvette, but it's a 1981 with a four speed manual transmission, quadrajet carburetor and an 8 track tape deck.

I like the classic feel of my Evo. It's nice knowing that this is an engine based on a simple design first penned in the early 1900s. I would have no worries jumping on it right now and riding 3000 miles across the country, any highway, anyway, anyhow. It's happiest on secondary roads, but it has no trouble blasting down the 4-lanes either. I don't think I will ever need another bike.
