I had one for about 6 months but ended up selling it after it stranded me a couple of times. It was too far gone.
It was fun as hell though. I wouldn't mind having another one in better shape. I haven't decided on a Heritage (what I had before) or a Fatboy. There are some good deals going around on them.
I think that is more you than your bike.
I just covered 300 miles coming home from the meet up and I had it nailed to 80 mph as much as I could (I didn't think the small town cops would like it if I did 80 through their town).
The bike was humming along at about 3k rpm and seemed happy enough.
I wouldn't hesitate to take mine cross country.
I love my EVO. I've ridden and worked on twin cams and I love my Evo.
I have updated the brakes and suspension on the bike as I didn't love that stuff on my 96 ultra but now that I have the 4 piston hd brembo brakes and progressive suspension front and rear it's a new bike with the best engine Harley Evo made. The engineer built, not accountant built EVO.
Loving my '97 Dyna Convertible too. Just recently got the bike from the original owner. He let it sit from 2008 until selling this past July. Just to be safe I had the local Harley shop go through it completely. They found nothing out of kilter at all. Out on an extended "road test" the mechanic stated the only issue he saw was a "slight hesitation" from the S&S carb at 95MPH going into 5 gear! Reliable? I think so.
In fact I am so enamored with the EVO I am looking to add an EVO FXR to my stable. I had an '82 FXRS Shovel in the early 90's and a later EVO powered model sounds just perfect.
I don't ride fast at all. 70 - 75 feels about right for me at my advanced age, 67. I've done all the go-fast I want. My son rides at 80 to 100 regularly on his '14 Ultra Classic and he has had my Dyna up to 90 with no problems. Nice to know the old girl can still dance if and when I need her to.
The local dealer has tried to get me to trade my '97 in on a new model on 3 separate occasions. Not only to make a sale, but really nice, clean, low mileage, EVO's are getting scarce and sought-after around here.
So it's only EVO's for me too.
Hey OMAHA, seen you posting about your FXR. How bout some pics for us new guys? You talk like you know where-from you speak. Would be enlightening to see what you ride.
