Basket case
I just picked up a '94 Softail standard basket case.
I was reassembling the oil pump and before I noticed that I didn't have the bolts for the oil pump I put a little gasket sealer on the gasket (to hold it in place while I put the pump on).
Is it gonna hurt anything not compressing the gasket right away with the gasket sealer on it?

To be reassembled.
It looks like I have everything except the oil pump bolts.
I have a bag that says oil pump bolts but what is in there is the tappet block bolts.

I'd say clean it off. Some kinds of sealer get fairly solid, won't squish out as much, but can slowly flatten more under pressure till you've lost the torque on the bolts. If you don't clean it off, check the torque a day later, then again a few days later. I use tacky red grease instead of sealer to hold gaskets on, don't need much, it's really sticky. Never had a leak using it, either.
