If you put it on piece by piece starting with just the shaft you can put it on without moving the motor.

Watch this starting at the 27 minute mark.

That is how I put mine on.

I did have to cut a small piece off an allen key and then turn that piece with a wrench but it is way better than moving the motor.

As for using the old shaft it depends on what the key ways look like.

Crazy how a shutdown and restart and immediatly get oil pressure back.

Try removing the dipstick while it's running when it looses oil pressure in case it's some kind of vent problem.

Nice video. That oil pump has always been a mystery to me.

Me too. Had mine off twice once with engine in and once with engine out. Was easier with engine out....but I wouldn't go to the trouble of removing the engine to replace the pump. Question though do you think the seal between the return and pump sides could be out? Would this cause warm thin oil to pump back to the return rotor and starve the pump side, when shutting off, then the tank lets oil back to the pump rotor and resumes pressure...I would tear it apart and inspect for damage before buying an entire pump, you can buy the seals, clips, gaskets and keys individually.

I am going to pull the oil pump apart this weekend. I'll let you know what I find out. Hopefully, nothing too serious.

IMHO, The oil pump is the heart of the engine (pumps the blood around to keep it alive) and I wouldn't bother with the Ultima. HD pumps are very good and reliable. You never mentioned if you have an oil cooler or not and what are the ambient temps when you ride. I know I cant go into Manhattan with my bike, engine temps get to high and the motor does get clackity......Is it like Texas or Maine?

The oil pump checked out ok. There was nothing apparent, all seals etc looked good. I need to order new gaskets for it now and I think I will order a new sending unit too. Should I order a another new oil pump and an oil cooler? I've never checked the oil temperature. Outside temperatures here are between 90 and 95 during the summer with 100% humidity, Now we are in the 70's. Every time I have to order something, it takes between 1 week and 60 days to get here. Thanks in advance.
