Default Tranny oil leak

Hey fellas,

So I have a tranny oil leak and I'm presuming its the seal from the tranny to primary. I checked the plug as well as the over flow tube and both are bone dry so that's why my diagnoses is the seal. Which I understand is common with our EVO's. So my question to you guys is I'm off next Thursday on a short 4 day trip to Lake Placid NY from Toronto Canada. Do you think I would be OK to bring some extra tranny oil and just check and make sure I'm topped up? The leak is slow and I know its a bitch to change the seal out. My indie said I should be fine and that when I get back he would do the job as apparently it's labor intensive. Thoughts??

Thanks in advance,

Edster

Run it, you will be fine, they leak worse sitting on the kick stand after a ride than running, and once they get a little low they don't leak as bad.
So..........as long as it leaking you are OK:-)

Thanks Harleycruiser. Hate having that thought in my mind and ruining my mojo.
Cheers

Mine leaked for awhile until I changed it. The the Trans has a seal and a oring that was my issue plus I changed all other seals on inner primary it was easy had it done in less then 2 hrs no more leaks. I just didn't like it because it was putting oil on my belt and tire

Hot oil can travel a long way and look as if there is far more of it than there really is. I rode my bike with just such a leak for 2-3 years, before something else packed up (gear lever return spring broke), which made it a bit more essential that I sorted things out!

Just as piece of mind for yourself , take the bike for a rip up the 401 , bring along a block of wood that will allow the bike to stand straight while on the side stand ,leave it that way while you go in for coffee at a Timmy's , go back out and see if you got a puddle.I've been through the tranny leak issue, took a couple or more seasons of riding and multiple teardown s and couple weeks back did a two day round trip from Sault ste Marie to Peterborough and back , finally bone dry , not a leak.

Your sure your leaking tranny fluid and having to put more in the tranny from time to time?

The inner primary main seal is more often the culprit. It's high up on the inner primary and general is the main leak but that would be primary fluid dripping from it. There's a two piece main bearing and sometime the race of the bearing, which is a separate piece, can shift on the tranny mainshaft and seep primary fluid. This bearing can be replaced with an aftermarket Baker 1 piece bearing and a very solid seal.

There's one seal in the tranny that will put an end to riding until it's fixed. The quad seal between the main shaft and the input shaft will let massive quantities of tranny fluid to run out while parked on the side stand. When that goes it needs immediate replacement.

A few drips once parked is typical of all older EVOs.

Best wishes and enjoy your ride!
