Hey Nevada72, Funny you bring that part of the bike up, the forks, head bearings, etc. were in great shape. The majority of the work was to the engine, chrome and paint. From what I've heard the bearings aren't too bad to replace, never done it myself though.
I have a 1988 FLHTC. Those bikes have the Hitachi starter and the tapered main shaft on the transmission. No big deal. I actually like the Hitachi style starter. I haven't had to fool with the clutch yet so, can't address the tapered shaft. I'm leaving my bike stage one only to try to make it a long time before I have to dig around in there. Otherwise, I'd buy a 1988 again in a second if the price were right. I love the look of the springers. I want a bad boy one of these days.

Today I test drove a 1988.5 near original softail that I seen on road side. #145 of 1450 ------- 85th anniversary collectors edition. He insisted that I take off on it,uuuummmm ok....
21k miles. Would like to add a Springer to my garage, if I could only spend $5,000 on something that I don't really need but WANT. I must say that my bike felt stronger though, but it started and ran great.
Funny how they always pop up when funds are low. Parts guy at the local shop asked if I was looking for another evo. Same deal, clean looking springer for $5k, man that's just too damn cheap.
