Restarting after empty
I have a 98 FLHRCI. In normal rideing situations how many miles should I expect to get out of a tank of fuel. I plan to test this out to make sure of the Miles per tank and am worried about starting after I run it dry. Should I be concerned?
Maybe try calculating your mpg first with a few fill-ups before going to empty.
Then, do the math to get an estimate of how far you think you should be able to go, based on the volume of the tank (however much it is on that bike).
Then, carry a small gas can with some fuel in it and run it all the way out, if you really need to know.
I wouldn't worry about re-starting it afterwards--people have been running out of gas for years.
All the best,
Shane

I've got the same bike as you and at 150 miles I'm on fumes. You can sneak just a tiny bit more out of it at that point but you have to lean the bike over towards the fuel pump to get the gas in there.
my fuel light comes on around 110 miles or so.

Don't do it. I used to run out of gas on my carbureted Vulcan750. It was always different depending on headwinds, crosswinds, slope, speed, gross weight.
So running it dry won't really prove anything. What it might do is pick up some dirt or rust. That made my carbs sputter, and need a rebuild. Don't know if it would affect FI but I don't push it on my FLHTCUI.

Electric in tank fuel pumps are actually cooled by the fuel in the tank, so your fuel pump will last longer if you make a habit of getting fuel before you actually need it. Though knowing miles to empty would be good to know on a trip, I would think the mpg x gal would get me as close as I want to push it...damn I love my carb with a reserve...
I was just going to imitate an ***, but you beat me to it.
