The 96 should be a top breather, where is your breather tube(s) if on head, it is a top breather, if down on bottom by the oil pump it is a bottom breather, I believe 92 was the last year of bottom breathers. Also is the crankcase breather to atmosphere or into the back of air cleaner?
I'll have to recheck when I get home but there is no crossover tube or any breather bolts on or behind the S&S carb. Only a hose just below the frame on bottom of the bike. Not sure if it makes a differance with the breather but I have an S&S bottom end.
I would pull rocker box covers and check oil returns are clear and not causing the oil to pool up there. Usually bad valve seals will smoke at start up it sound more like could be your rocker box if filling up And the the excess is being sucked out through the breather tubes.
Sorry Bob totally missed this reply. I'm gonna start pulling it apart this weekend and will check for this, thanks!
I checked and the only vent line I have comes out the bottom of my engine. Here's a pic of my carb/heads were the crossover tube would be if it was a head breather, am I correct?
And the only tube/hose coming out the carb, the bowl overflow I assume.
You definitely should have a breather bar or at least breather bolts going into the heads vented to carb back or all the way down to the ground. As stated 92 was the last year for the bottom breather and right now your breather is blocked off.
