Rolling the dice on disturbing the base gaskets and leaking with the head removal. Heck of alot of work to do it again
Thanks for the link. Cant say it didnt cross my mind with the base gasket. I assume what your saying is it would be best to pull the whole top end and replace all gaskets?

There is a trick to remove the piston clips and slide the pins out that leaves the pistons in the jugs or hone and new rings if sliding the pistons out of the jugs. Is something to think about when pulling the heads

Ok thanks. If I pull the jugs i'll do a hone and rings or even bore and pistons if necessary. If im taking them off might as well do go the extra step.

Good move, it would be insane to not at least re-ring and base gaskets,
let us know the bore size, I'm suspecting a big bore in there.

Talked to S&S and the bottom end left there facility as a stock bore 4 1/4 stroke lower end in 1995. I took the rocker box covers off last night and there are no umbrella valves so I have to assume the heads are pre 92 like someone mentioned? The rocker box gaskets are cork if that means anything? I had an unbelievable time getting the rear rocker cover to clear the frame getting it out and had to use a mallet. Is there a better way to put it back in? Maybe loosen the motor or something? There is a weld on the frame I could grind down that may make it easier but not sure? Also I kinda buggered up the cover getting it off so thinking im gonna buy new covers, any recommendations on what to buy? I'll be pulling the heads and cylinders off in the next couple days and post up what I find.

Yeah the rear rocker box on a softail is a PITA!!!!
I take mine apart like a jig saw puzzle.
First I take off the top box then I loosen all the bolts connecting the bottom box to the head.
When I get that loose I can take out the push rods and rocker arms and the bottom boxes.

Every time I work on mine I wish I had the engineer who designed the frame clearance near by to express to him my opinions of his excellent job!!!!!!!!!!!
If there was just a 1/4" more clearance there wouldn't be a problem..

Yeah 1/4" would probably work dammit! Havent taken the bottom ring of on the rear yet but looks like the intake spring is going to need to be compressed a bit to do it, unless I undo the head bolts and maybe it would lift off with the head, dunno?

I've also done some reading on rocker box's and found that I can use the later boxes on my heads, just cant use the early boxes on later (head breather) heads. So thats good i'll just buy a new set of boxes since mine are kinda hammered anyways.

I didn't have to mess with the heads when I took mine off.
Like I said it's a jig saw puzzle.
It's an unholy PITA but it is doable..

To put the rear box back in I wonder if theres any way to undo the front motor mount and get the engine to drop a little bit? Anyone ever done this or have any thoughts on doing it? Thanks.
