To put the rear box back in I wonder if theres any way to undo the front motor mount and get the engine to drop a little bit? Anyone ever done this or have any thoughts on doing it? Thanks.
On a softail the motor sits on the frame so I don't think that will work.
I've always just reversed the jig saw puzzle to put mine back on.
Ok so I got it taken apart. Im going to attach some photos hoping you guys can tell me what im looking at. Im seeing a definite problem with the rear exhaust valve and some but not as bad on the front? Not sure about cylinders but tried to get good pics. You can still see some hone marks and there are no grooves or scratches that I can feel anyways.
Got the pistons off and they are stock Harley pistons part #22091-83B as are the cylinders and heads. With the pistons being stock I assume that means the cylinders haven't been bored?
Pack up the barrels and the heads and send them to Hilllside. Meanwhile, open up the cam chest and see what you have in there for a cam. Then call Scott and discuss what kind of parts you need to really wake it up, since you're this far in. Then send a check.....

I've heard really good things about Hillside in this forum so I wouldn't hessitate to use them. But I have a reputable shop (RE Engineering) within driving distance so I'm gonna use them. I'm very happy with the way my bike runs and if it wasn't for using oil I wouldn't do a thing to it honestly so a cam change is spending money I don't need too. I'm thinking lifters are something I should do though since its apart.
Cylinders have had a piston stick to them causing the scuffing, that is your source of oil usage, surprised the compression check was as good as it was

Thanks for the info bagger. I posted the pics so I could possibly get educated a bit on what im looking at and what might have caused my problems. THis way at least id have an idea what to expect when the parts get dropped off at the machine shop.

Consider using Cometic gaskets for the top end re-assembly Lotsa folks use and like James gaskets (they been around longer) but so far (knock on wood), I have had very good results with Cometic (one Pan, two Shovels, and one Evo).
Re: lifters. How many miles on the bike? Went 65K on my 84 before honing lifter blocks and installing oversize lifters (couldn't get rid of lower end noise and chased the problem to the lifters being worn). You can mike them to determine wear and also detemine how much they need to be honed out. I went with Jims lifters (they had problems with their Big roller system and have gone back to the the traditional type with no problems)

Thanks for the recommendation on gaskets, long as Cometic has rubber for the rocker boxes im good using them.
Mileage on the bike when I got it in May showed 9000 on the odometer and PO assured me it was accurate, I have 13400 on it now. Had a local indy check it over the day I bought it and said the bike is super clean and thinks millage is probably legit. Only thing I know for a fact is I called S&S and the bottom end did come out of there facility in late 95. Besides having to replace the ignition the bike has run flawless. I just road 2 up with the wife and all of our gear over 800 miles in two days climbing through the mountains to the coast and back and never a hick up, burned through a quart of oil though. I've read about noise and vibration from other evo's but mines super smooth and no noise at all.
