Default 1998 fxdl - Finicky on cold start

Hey all I have a 98 fxdl with se slip ons and k and n filter. Bought last year and noticed that it is very enrichener dependent on cold starts. I would say that on 60 degree day needs 10 min running before can push it in. I rode recently near 40f and it wanted a bit of enrichener even after 10 miles on expressway. While it runs find when good and aarm something seems amiss. I put next size up slow jet, drilled out idle mixture screw and have it at 2.75 turns. I also sprayed wd40 at intake seals and carb seal while running with no change in idle speed.

I had an 03 fxd back then and with stage 1 and slow jet and air fuel adjust, it would start without enrichener in warm weather. That TC was not nearly as finicky in the cold.

Any thoughts?

Thanks alot.

Is this normal behavior for an evo? My twin cam was not nearly as sensitive to cold

I've only owned 2 but both did the same thing with the stock ignition module and the CV carb.

Im no expert but I would say that that is not normal. Mine warms up in a couple of minutes and I dont need the enricher to start it unless it is below 50 degrees. Is your idle speed set to 1000 rpm? Low idle speed will cause them to act cold natured for the first 5 or 10 minutes.

Yes, idle is at 1000 rpm. I tend to agree with you, because theoretically, the evo with a keihin and a twin cam with a keihin to not be much different in starting and running. Honestly, my 82 fxr shovel is better behaved with cold start and cold running, and it has stock carb.

Could it have a vacuum leak without high idle speed, and without any change in rpm with spraying the seals with wd40 while running??

That's pretty much how mine run.

The FXR likes a bit of enricher for cold morning starts. The EG doesn't need any at all.

For both, I use the thumb screw to fast idle at around 1500 or so while I'm putting on my jacket and helmet and such. By the time I'm ready to go, so are they.

Ok, but this does not describe my evo at all. It always requires FULL enrichener on cold start at ANY ambient temp, and will require for several minutes of riding even in mild or warm ambient temps before enrichener can be pushed in. I gather that there is something wrong with mine. ??

If your compression is good, the only other place there could a vacuum leak is inside the carb. You have either a very lean condition or weak spark at startup. What spark plugs are you using?
