Default Sputtering and Clanking

I have a 1995 Road King with only 36000 miles. Just recently, the bike started to sputter and there was a loud clanking noise coming from the bottom right of the engine (EVO 80 cubic inch). I noticed that this only happens after I have been riding for about 15 minutes. I pulled the timing / cam cover but did not find any damage inside. Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of that would make the motor miss and make noise would be a lifter going bad...I'm guessing the thicker oil when it is cold keeps it quiet till the oil heats up and thins out?

Start the bike when cold, lock throttle just above idle,(or just increase idle a bit), now listen to it for change in sound and use a long 3/8"drive extension in your ear and place on lifter blocks, cam cover, rocker covers, to help pinpoint...
Assuming you don't have a stethoscope....

A long screwdriver does well. Long because it gets your ears farther away from engine noise.

It lets you listen to more of the noise transferred through the screwdriver.

I did say LONG extension, mine is sixteen inches and works well plus you can add more if need be if you have a bad back or something of the sort, as I do. Screw drivers work okay but more pronounced WITHOUT a handle, extension fits my ear better.
To each their own....

36,000 miles with an intermittent noise from the engine....

Check for loose compensator nut.

Replace the lifters, now (OEM units are fine).

Dang Well maybe I should have added Also to the sentence.

I wasn't saying your idea was bad or wrong just another opinion on a Public Forum.

A screwdriver handle is easier on my ear when holding to my ear.
As in motor vibes
