Default 91 FLHTC seat issues

recently picked up a 1991 Electra Glide Classic. As expected there are a few parts that have gone missing over the years. My current issue is the seating arrangement. It had a road king style solo on it with a passenger pad. That won't work for the wife so I am working on putting an OEM seat on with the grab bar. However, not having owned an EG before I am learning many things on the fly. The biggest problem is finding a pack mount that will work. the parts book shows a mount with tabs on the rear legs. That will never work. I need a mount that will slide into the frame tubes and held in place with rivets. Compounding that is that the grab bar seems to be made for a later year ultra or something, as the rear part is flat stock with two bolt holes. Now, the only pack mounts I have seen with the slide in legs are 88-90, and the mounts with the two holes on the front lip seem to be for 92 or later. Does this cross breed I am trying to explain exist? I thought I saw a picture of one. another question, has anyone tried to take the earlier style of mount and modify it to hook up with the later style grab bar? I don't want to put a tour pack on, but I did find a 4 bar luggage rack with a passenger back rest that will mount to pack mount, which solves a whole lot of problems if I can only find the right mount. Hope someone can help, because I am getting a bit frustrated.

Here's a good way to lookup parts and part numbers. If you can find a part number then many times you can locate a part using Google.

I think I have all the parts you need. However, you can make a newer tour pack rack work. There are quite a few thread here in the Evo forum discussing it. If you decide that you want the factory parts, let me know.

Thanks. I have the parts book for this bike, with the part # (53411-91), but the picture shows the part for the 92 (53411-92A), with no explanation for the 91. The difference is in the rear legs. They have to be just round tubes with no tabs welded on. I have seen other posts where these people have taken them off. So why is it so hard to find one? I'm to the point now of considering modifying the 92A mount I have (read as following picture in the book and not having experience with these parts, and bought it). I just can't believe it's so hard to find one.

I would definitely be interested in the parts. I would like to see some pictures first though. Don't take that the wrong way, but after buying a few of the wrong parts I am a bit gun shy. Now I hope I can sell them and get some of my money back. What an expensive learning curve.

When your bike and mine were made H-D only made a total of around 50k bikes a year. These days they make several times that number, so parts availability for our bikes is very different, compared with modern bikes. It sounds as if you are trying to undo a PO's conversion into a pseudo RK. It is a challenge for us to convert our older Evos to look like any current bike, for a wide variety of reasons.

When new your bike had a fixed rack and fixed tourpak, with passenger backrest. Even making the tourpak detachable required a bit of home customising, as there were no qd kits to do that at the time. Do check the on-line parts websites, as GuineaPig suggested, to see your bike's original spec, which will also show you the parts that Tom has offered.

I don't know what book you have but the reason I recommended one of the OEM parts finders is because thy give you a picture of the parts along with part numbers. Great for finding out your part and if a part was used on multiple models or years.

I have the factory parts book as well as the FSM. Your suggestion has been very helpful as I able to go to other years and see the differences in the mounts. That is how I discovered that the earlier pack mount was the rigid design, like mine, and the later design has the two holes in the front of the platform lip, which works with the grab bar I have. It seems to me that this model/year was a transition, and the pack mount became a cross breed. No wonder I am having trouble finding the right part.
On another note, I have heard that it is possible to fit a newer style pack mount to an older bike. Anyone know what part #'s I would need for this, and what threads I could search for?

I take no offense to that. You don't know me, I don't know you. It's cool. So you need the original grab bar, and original tour pack bracket. Both of which I have. Not that I don't want to get rid of my parts, but you really should check out this thread before you buy or do something that you could have done better.
Your '91 and my '90 are the same configuration, and I use the quick detach stuff on mine. After looking at the post, if you decide you want pics of what I have, let me know.

I am leaning toward the OEM route, but the quick connect idea is tempting. Guess I like the idea of having the bike more "original." I spent a lot of time and money finding the parts I have already, and thinking of starting over on my thin budget is not too appealing. Maybe you can answer a couple of questions. Can you tell me what part #'s you used for the quick detach setup? I went to the HD site and found that there is a kit for the rear mount point that looks like a V shaped bracket, and another kit for the front. Are these what you are referring to? the other big question is, can I use the OEM seat and maybe the grab bar with the quick setup? As I mentioned, starting again is not a good option for me, but there are more options available. BTW, thanks for your help. Harleys on a shoestring is a challenge, but then again, I own Harleys.
