This. If the battery is three years or older, I'd replace it and see how things look from there.

Call me kooky but why not just jump the solenoid relay to the starter? It don't cost nuttin and might save you from buying sumptin you don't need.

"You Took the words right out of my mouth"

That's what I do to eliminate a battery or starter issue.

Just make sure its in neutral first......

That is a bad idea.
Doing that would keep the starter on all the time the wire is connected.
You need some kind of switch to cut off the starter when the motor starts.

Just changing the relay isn't a permanent fix.
Sometimes it will work for a while after changing the relay but not for long.

If the problem is the "Dreaded Click" you have 2 options.
1) Clean all the connectors in the wiring harness.
2) Bypass the wiring harness with a jumper wire from the battery.

Depending on which model bike you have you may need to wire in an additional relay to get the second option to work.
In the OPs case (softail) all he would need is a 20 amp fused wire.

A volt meter will tell you what your problem is without endangering anything.

If you are getting full voltage at the green wire then you have to clean the contacts in the starter.

I didn't mean wire it in, just a horseshoe shaped piece of wire used to jump the terminals momentarily to determine if the battery has enough amps to spin the starter over. It could also determine if the starter is good.

I've had to use this as an emergency measure a few times myself and a few times on friends bikes. If it just clicks when the stater button on the handlebar is pushed there's a high probability this test will help diagnose what components are bad. I always carry a piece of wire with me for this reason. I've had the starter relay on my bike fail 3 times in the last 12 years.

Come on man....God..... Just take a screw driver and jump it across both terminals for a second just to test the battery and the starter and the solenoid all at the same time.... To just eliminate any other issues and drive you in the right direction.....

I'll tell ya that the ignition switch has the tendency not to deliver the power where it needs to go. I remember one time my bike died on me on the road, so I went across the street to a dealership and asked the shop service writer if he could help me out with a jumper wire and electrical tape. He did without hesitation, thank god. I was able to jump out the switch and get home. Nice guy....
The next day I replaced the ignition switch and all was well....
