If the motor is spinning over slowly I agree that it is probably the battery.
I agree. you know how it is, sometimes you gotta ask more questions.

Before I joined the Forum I was fighting the Dreaded Click.
I replaced all kinds of parts trying to fix it.

Now when someone tells me their bike just clicks I automatically think it is the Dreaded Click.

Is the dreaded click described as a click and no start or turn at all , or , a click then a pause before it starts to turn over ?assuming you keep holding the start switch .
Sometimes mine would go right over sometime it would engage, pause, turn and start.

So a second relay on my bike wouldn't clear up the pause, I've always assumed it's because of what stroke it's at,thanks Tex.

my 85 has had the pause since it was new in 85. i assume it was on a compression stroke. it always starts so i don't get concerned about it.

I gotcha, my Twinkie riding friends here it and think there is something wrong, but I'm used to it, good to know it's normal.

"Compression stall" was pretty common on early Evos. In '94, the MoCo juggled the primary and starter gear ratios, to give the starter motor more leverage against the engine, which must have helped. My '94 Softail has never done this unless the battery is near death.

Not sure what year the starter kw rating changed from .8 to 1.2 but that as well coupled with the different starter drives and rings ratio really does create that compression lug at start up.

One could always install a 1.4 kw or higher starter but if you do don't forget to up the starter cable and battery cca rating....
