I drained my tank into my 5 gallon can with the petcock ON, then switched to reserve and drained the rest into my oil drain pan as shown. Looks like about a quart. I marked my can where is first filled to and then poured the reserve fuel in and made a mark for it. I might get 5 miles on reserve if Im lucky.....
Funny, I had the opposite problem with the Pingle petcock I put on my bike. Where before, I had a 5 gallon tank with 1.2 gallon reserve (Softails are different, remember). Since installing the Pingel, I now have about a 1.6 gallon reserve. Before, I could do 180-200 miles to reserve. Now I'm hitting reserve at about 160 or so.

I had the same problem.
I trimmed off about a 1/2" of the reserve tube and now my reserve is about 1 gallon.
The reserve is controlled by the petcock not the tank.
That's not actually true, if took my petcock from old tank and put in my new tanks, it wouldn't be the same amount of fuel because of the length and shape of the bottom,(old ones curve, new are flat),so I would actually have more fuel in reserve with new tanks.
Just something else to consider.
Not to split hairs here, but what you just showed is a perfect example of the petcock controlling the amount of fuel in reserve like THC said. Read it again if you don't think so.
It is in relation to the newer tanks, but the petcock is determining the amount of fuel once again.
