Got a 1995 Road King EVO. Need to find out what I have. Help.
Recently purchased a 1995 FLHR. Unknown 80" EVO.
I dont know the history. Fires right up!, but has a slap or rattle coming out of the rear cylinder. One exhaust pipe blows out normal I would say. The other pipe end has significant higher compression(blows the exhaust air with more !? It sound like something is slapping/rattling!?/
What to do first and foremost?
How should I start tearing into the beast?
What to look for?
I'm going to check valve clearances here in a couple days.

What to do first and foremost? Run a compression test and get back to us.
How should I start tearing into the beast? From the top down.

If you don't already have it I recommend getting the Factory Service Manual and the Parts Book for your bike.

I just got a brand new service manual for $ 30 on eBay. Delivered yesterday.
I just fixed the spedo problem, it was the speed sensor! Old sensor was from 1994! Old owner had it for 5 years and would ride at most 30-40 miles per ride. Back problem. He never dealt with it, so I did. Feel good alright.
About the the parts book, how to obtain?
Also how about checking for upgrades throughout the engine? Cams and so fourth.
I'm in the same situation as you are...I've got a 95 Road King that has God knows what done to it. One thing's for sure...no one knows until they know. I just haven't had the ***** to start ripping the damn thing apart. All I've had the stones to do is a little bit of wiring and ripped the wheels off to replace the rubber (good news...the rear I spent last year on is a 5110 date code...got the 0903 front beaten handily@). Maybe the engine's guts will pop up on my radar before the season starts.

Yeah I got it with brand new rubber. So all I got is the engine to rip apart and start digging for build details. I'm doing compression and leak down here soon and will report back. I know it needs a valve adjustment. The guy I bought it off was the type to take it to the stealership for a blinker replacement but I don't think maintenance was his thing, Sat it garage for 2 years before I picked it up.!

Lucky you. Mine came from South of the Border when our dollar was robust against yours. So there's no damn chance of me getting any info the easy way. Oh well...what fun is the easy way?
If you have the stock exhaust system the two mufflers will blow differently, because of the way the pipes are arranged. So that isn't an indication of any problems. A compression test is the only reliable indicator, as Texas suggests.
Welcome to the Evo fold, you're in good company in here! I went to our favourite dealer's open day yesterday and there were three notable Evos there: a 92/3 FLHS same colour as my '90; a mid-80s Glide looking very well used; plus a '98 RK in 95th Anniversary colours of maroon and gold - my favourite combo of all time!
