Default Started cam change. Interesting find!

So I decided to start my cam change today since the weather sucks. Drained an pulled the tank, pulled the top of the rocker box, roll the motor till both valves were closed, unbolted the lower rocker box and pulled it. Went to pull the pushrod up through the hole and it wouldn't come thru. WTF?? So I pull the pushrod cover and it's got adjustable pushrods!! I was under the impression that my motor was never opened up. No markings on the adjustables, but I was able to adjust it to the point I could get it out without messing with the lifter blocks so I'm thinking it's the "ez-adjust" type. I'm real curious to see what's inside the cam chest when I open it up. Haven't ordered any new parts yet.

I was changing the cam cover to a chrome one.
reading on here I thought I'd change the cam lifters.

Opened it up and the was an EV13 and Johnson lifters in great shape.

Hope your luck is good too.

So am I. I can only think of a couple reason why someone would swap out the OEM rods for adjustables. One is a cam change or lifter change. The other is 'just because'.

Reed,

I guess we shall see! My initial thought is maybe a cam bearing change at some point. However, this bike pulls like crazy when you roll on the throttle above 2500-3000 RPM. I know it sounds lame but the reason I thought It was unmolested was that the points cover is still riveted on. Everyone I know that's been gone into the use screws to put in back on.

If it does that I guarantee you that the cam ain't stock.

FWIW I rebuilt a basket case last year and I put rivets in the points cover just because I liked the V2 emblem.

Like THC posted, it probably doesn't have the stock cam. Even though the pre-93 cams were a bit better than the later ones. My stock 93 cam had '0' overlap in it. And could barely get out of it's own way. EPA strikes again....

Based on what you're saying, I'm betting it's either got an EV13 or EV27 in it (or another mfg equivalent). My 93 FLHS with the EV27 starts pulling about that rpm range, and keeps me smiling all the way up to the rev limiter.

The only decent factory cams were from 88-91 with 5* of overlap and .495" lift other than that they all sucked.

Sounds like you have quickies. regular adjustables are not removable without lifting the lifter blocks. If your power band is coming on that good at that rpm than I would think your cam is somewhat aggressive requiring the adjustable pushrods because the base circle of the cam is smaller. what you can do now that you have the pushrods out is get a dial indicator and measure the amount of lift of both intake and exhaust lobes of the cam. Harbor freight sells them at a pretty reasonable price. It will give you a good indication as to what cam you might have.

I have a dial indicator and magnetic base that I use for wheel bearing end play. I did some me online research and my pushrods are Crane "time savers". To be honest I'm tempted to go back to non-adjustables for the sake of simplicity.

Wait till u get it apart. I am one of the guys that will not put a motor together without adjustable push rods. Stock or otherwise . I have in the past cut the stockers and tossed just for a push rod tube repair. Most guys are frightened by adjusting them......me I think there is to much variance from motor to motor to not do it. I also in the past have used rivets to hide a newer ignition and cam change. Lol
Just pull the cam it will be pretty evident if its stock or not. May even be marked. Guys here are pretty sharp. Picture of lobes u will get info

I agree! I definitely want to verify that I have the upgraded cam bearing.
