Default Early Softail with Kicker-draging clutch

My 1985 softie has a clutch that has always dragged, it requires the clutch cable to have no play for the clutch to release, as if the primary oil is too thick and the oil between the plates causes the drag. I use HD oil, filling it through the derby cover upright until no more will go in.

Is it ok to use less oil in these early evo, essentially shovelhead, primaries? or do you guys recommend and thiner oil?

Cheers

Steve

Try using ATF and only putting in enough to touch the bottom of the clutch hub.

In addition to THC`s suggestion, I recommend you go through a complete adjustment of the clutch, beginning with a diaphragm spring adjustment.

It could be that the spring adjuster plate needs to be moved to another position.

I have four speed kicker and run drag specialties primary oil. Adjust clutch cable to have approx eighth inch of play at the lever. Remove derby cover and adjust diaphragm as Dan said,, you want to see it move towards you maybe an eighth of an inch when pulling the clutch lever.
Also, I fill primary thru the derby with bike leaning on the kick stand to the opening, that's plenty.

Steve, hello old chap. I get the feeling you are not using a factory service manual! The correct oil level is lower than you state, also clutch adjustment involves a touching little procedure, which you can find here, where you will find two Stickies.

grbrown, old bean, you are most correct. I have a Clymer manual. It says to fill upright until about to spill out(I think).

Will do as suggested and see how I get on.

misfit, will check the cable out, blinkin' great thing it is!

Hadn't realised it was so bad, will get a proper manual. Is it downloadable yet or does the moco still frown upon that?

You'll soon discover that we generally hold the aftermarket manuals in low regard and strongly recommend the factory one. They are specific to each model year, and are accurate!
