My friend has a 2000 fat boy EVO that is running poor. It started with bike sitting and gas going bad. He ran sea foam through the bike, still ran bad so he flushed tank and still has the issue.
He purchased a factory carb (apples to apples) and still has the issue, starts up and runs poor.(Poor- Popping back through the intake, spitting and sputtering) If you pull the choke out it will run okay. He drained tank again, pulled petcock and flushed, new gas, replace intake gaskets and took on a long test ride and still running bad. The bike has a Kuryakan Hyper charge air cleaner assemble.
Things done....
* New Carb
* New Intake Gaskets
* New Vacuum Lines
* Flushed tank, pulled petcock and flushed.
* Installed new high test gas.
I'd certainly suspect either the intake gaskets (between the manifold and the heads) or the gasket from the carb to the manifold. And is the backing plate for the POS Hypercharger holding the carb tight to the manifold?
Suggestions above remain good ones. The hypercharger is not a wise installation IMHO and is renown for causing running problems. Inlet and exhaust leaks are a real possibility, from what you describe, so attend to those first. If between the two of you you cannot sort it out quickly then save your sanity and take it to a local indy. Unfortunately there is only so much we can suggest from afar!
