The original rods are not only plain, they also are a poor design and prone to failure. Whatever you replace it with, make sure it has heim joints on the ends.
Here's an idea.
Take a piece of chain and weld all the loops so that it is straight and stable.
Then weld on some threaded ends to connect to the heim joints.
Then either chrome it or powder coat it.
Wa La you now have a super cool shift linkage!!!!!
A lot of after market HD and other manufactures supply replacements and covers, hard to believe you can't find something acceptable. fWIW..I have an HD cover and am happy with it.
