Default Pop goes the clutch

Don't know if I did some real damage to the clutch or a cheap repair. Pulled the clutch to put the bike into gear. There was a loud pop and the clutch went soft. Thought the cable broke but it was still good. Looked at the trans and the arm were the clutch cable ties in, you can spin it freely by hand

Ball and ramp pushes the rod. What bike are you working on?

85 Electra Glide. I'm hoping it's just the ball and ramp and not in something else

Your bike does not have the ball and ramp system (Ball and Ramp system came out in `87).

It is probably a broken release finger, pull the cover off, you will see it.

It`s an easy fix, part is not expensive. If the dealer says obsolete (I hear that all the time on parts for my `89), they are available aftermarket.

Item 62, lower part of the illustration:

I hope so it would really suck if the rod push threw the clutch hub or something

Dan thank you got the part on order. I'm not a big fan of the Harley dealership down here.

That year had the 4 cast aluminium studs on the clutch basket that held the pressure plate spring bolts down , those broke all the time.

Item #5 in the break down, or could be the big snap ring let go on you.

Pull up on it and see if you can pull it out...the shaft may be broken.

Keeping clutch properly adjusted helps parts last longer, always carry spare arm and bearing.

99% sure its your clutch release finger on the carb side of the bike. Takes about 5 mins to pull the outside cover to inspect (if you lean the bike to the left you should not even lose any tranny oil). Mine popped on a ride into work a couple of months ago and I was able to replace it after work as i went and bought the finger + 2-3 tools needed at lunch.

Be careful and do not ride it as the fingers can get into the tranny gears. Plus while you have it apart check the roller race that the fingers hit as the rollers have a history of giving up the ghost and leaving the two bearing surfaces rubbing against each other.
