Hmmmm. I'm not sure about the position. I have never ever turned mine off! I'm glad you got it running. If you need to hold the choke out, you need to tighten the nut on the shaft. Be EASY!! It is plastic and breaks fast. Then you have to take the carb off to put a new choke (enrichner) cable on (ask me how I know!)

I'm careful & I still break them. The heat from the engine makes that plastic so damn brittle you look at it & it breaks. I keep a spare in the toolbox now.
"Turn the pet **** off, loosen the nut holding the petcock to the tank just enough to turn the pet **** 180 degrees then tighten back up. Next remove the screws holding the back of the vacuum thing to the petcock. Reverse the spring and diagram. Reassemble. Loosen nut and turn petcock back to original position.
Next time you have the tank or carb off, remove the T vacuum line and run a vacuum line from the carb to the voes"
