When I've done my bearings I never back off a full 1/4 turn. I always based the back off amount on the free roll of the wheel. it's a thing you learn from years of servicing....
Ok now I'm lost... what are you talking about with that backing off 1/4 turn??
I've always just torqued mine down and rode.
As for free play of the wheel that is set with end play and not the wheel bearings.

Or did I miss something?????
No... Stupid me...... think I had too many beers last night......
well I put the bike up on the jack, pulled the bags and side panels and went front to back wiggling everything I could find. Wire tied a few things, tighted a few things. I found my front wheel bearings had some play in them. Replaced the tire and the wheel bearings reasembled everything. No more vibrations, no more rattle, everything is good.
