1996 RoadKing 55k miles. ok what I can best describe as a rattle sounding mostly like a chain hitting. BUT it only happens at 50mph and up AND ONLY when I am veering/turning to the left. Trying to isolate it I have applied the front or the bake brake, clutch in or out, still does it. On the throttle or off the throttle, no change. I have combed the bike for anything loose. Secured and tighten a few things. No change. I have checked my primary chain tension.OK At that speed on windy roads I can't be sure exactly where its coming from but sounds like right side in the area of the motor but not positive. Running out of common sence stuff. Any ideas???
FYI- if I take my finger and snap the chrome cover over the horn really fast thats close to what I'm hearing. Also after noticing my front tire pretty scalloped this season I had the forks serviced. This rattle was there last year as well. Riding on this tire I'm sure I getting more than usual vibration
1) Have any of the engine mounts been changed?
2) Did you check all the exhaust heat shields? The hose clamp may be tight and the mount broke.
3) Check the 'Y' pipe on the rear cylinder. They like to crack.
4) Any performance upgrades to the engine?
5) Change that front tire!
6) Welcome to the forum.
seems I might have changed a front mount several years ago. After market exhaust, all shields are tight and no Y pipe any more. Front tire will be changed soon. It definitely howls above 50mph. Still unshure what the rattle is.
Funny this thread should appear. I just got home from the South Dakota trip, and the last 300 or so miles I had this weird rattle too.
It would only happen on deceleration, seemed almost but not exactly a function of RPM, sounded mechanical but not "harsh".
Long story short, after spending five hours visualising all the things I was going to have to rebuild, it occurred to me that I neglected to zip tie my new throttle and idle cables. That's what it was. They were banging against the frame.
These things shake. Anything loose, anything at all, is going to rattle.
Replace the muffler rear rubber mounts, like 2 bucks each
Check out the exhaust mount and bolts by the transmission
Make sure kick stand is on the rubber snubber when up, and not hitting metal anywhere
Check all floorboard mounting bolts
Good luck finding it, I can't stand rattles either.
Welcome to the world of Harley-Davidson. I probably spend more time chasing squeaks, creaks and rattles than anything else on my bike. It's like a game the bike plays with me, called "what's this noise, Uncle G?"
