1995 heritage Classic. I have a pretty large gap between the chrome panel housing and the speedometer. So I ran up to HD to see if they could assist me. I ordered the two parts they said I needed, a rubber gasket and a plastic bracket. My issue is that I can't figure out how they fit. The bracket has a couple of screw holes, but there is no place that I see screws around the speedometer where it might attach. The rubber gasket fits nicely onto the speedometer base. Is the gasket all that is required, both the gasket and bracket, or nothing at all? I had an indy a couple of years ago tell me that nothing goes in there. But while doing some other work in there last week, I really noticed that it doesn't seem right that there's such a big gap where water could run down in there. Any input would be great.
Got picts of what you got from the dealership??
I can't think of any place for a plastic part right off my head but a pict may help.
I've just got the rubber piece between the speedo and the speedo bracket myself.
Thanks THC. I'll post pic when I get home a little later today. But I was thinking the rubber gasket is all that goes in there, just like you said it's all you have. It fits snug on speedo base and closes the gap, but just wanted to make sure. My service manual diagram is a little hard to see, and I think HD was looking at a later year softail diagram because they couldn't find any info for a real bike. lol
My '94 just has a rubber collar around the speedo that steadies it from rocking from vibration. It sounds to me like they sold you the mounting for the '96 up digital speedometer.
I'm at work now, but I'll look up the part number when I get home.
Here is a pic of the plastic bracket. My 95-96 factory softail service manual has a diagram showing this, along with the rubber gasket, as part of the assembly.
That back clamp is for 96-98 and a digital speedo with transmission speed sensor. Do you have a cable driven speedo? If so that back clamp is not going to work. What you need is in this link,
Wish the manual could state that .Been like that ever since I've owned it. No problem other than aggravating me that HD would design it like that....should have investigated it a little further instead of just listening to the indy. Just the rubber gasket fits and looks correct. Thanks for the website...hopefully I can get a front fender lamp assembly from those guys. I could only find one of those through e-bay that didn't fit right ( China junk), if only I didn't love this darn evo so much.....
It's on and done...speedo sets like it's supposed to, nice and snug. I do believe the bracket is for the 96, as stated. Thanks for those who responded.
