If you still have 1990 model year parts on the bike, make sure you use the upgraded pulley hardware: pulley, spacer, oil seal, lock plate and bolts, pulley nut (1995 model year parts).
Also replace:
Inner primary bearing inner race (on mainshaft)
Inner primary bearing outer race and seal (inner primary cover)
Quad seal (under pulley spacer)
Shift shaft oil seal (inner primary cover)
Starter jackshaft oil seal (inner primary cover)
Consider removing the gearset, and replace the springs on the shifter shaft/pawl.

hd's side car belt is strong and will last alot of miles. have a friend that was breaking belts all the time, he's not broken the sidecar belt in the last 6 years. new pulleys and replcae the locking plate and every seal and gasket you can.
4K, no way!
On my 2012 FLHTK I had the crank go south. They pulled the motor to discover the noise. I came up with a new 2015 take off motor and the installed it for me. I asked if now was the time to change the belt, he said that were already there, now would be the time. Total for all labor and the gaskets, fluids and the new belt was $1170.00. So four grand is a bend over price if I ever heard one. My Indy is Rev's cycles in Bastrop, TX.
This may be one of the reasons so many are moving here from California!
The shifter lever on the transmission, they all go bad.
Install a "Ball" starter clutch , seals and primary bearing.
A belt system might be a great idea, I am doing mine right now.
It lightens the drive train 22LBS!
