I have a 98 superglide, how do check the front and rear motor mounts? The motor doesn't move when I pull on it. Any othr suggestions thanks.

Check and see if the mounts are contacting the metal (rubber to metal). I also noticed when my front mount was going bad that my front head rocker box was especially close to my frame down tube. You should pretty much be able to get a finger in between there

Bad on the left. Good on the right. The left mount will contact the metal at the top

Also check that the top hump of the mount is not in contact in the front. On the back you need a mirror and a flashlight to see it the mount has twisted. You should see equal space from top to bottom between the mount and trans in the back

Misfitjason's pic is the best way to tell when the front mount is shot. As mentioned, the rear is harder to see. What I noticed was some excessive shaking or visible vibrations to the rear fender at low speed. Not sure if that was caused by the front or the rear mount, but I swapped them both out at the same time and it took care of the vibration.

One thing to note, when changing your oil try to avoid letting the oil drip on the front mount. The motor oil will cause the rubber to rot out sooner. YD

Your bike is almost 20 years old and I suspect will benefit from new mounts, especially if they look old and original. I also recommend a True-Track kit, which provides lateral support to those mounts and may even extend their service life. In addition the improvement in ride quality is quite something to experience and well worthwhile.

I am the original owner of the bike. The bike was never abused. Also when I changed the oil , I alwys use tin foil and slip it under the oilfilter to divert it to the pan never a mess so that should help with the lasting of the part. Now the front , do you have to take out to check? Now I can still put my finger between the front exhaust and frame. I will inspect the back

You will be able to see the gap on the front mount (just like the pic in Misfitjasons post), all you have to do is stoop down and look. Maybe a flashlight will help, but pretty easy to see. YD

Why are you questioning the condition, any handling problems? when my mounts were cooked it cornered like I was going over railroad tracks, shook like mad and chattered. Check the front, see if the hump is touching on the top and if there's space on the bottom, its easy with a flashlight. The rear you need a mirror and flashlight. If you're replacing the front and you don't mind spending more, the vibratechnics predator is really a nice mount. I wish I kept mine, I traded it because I was selling my bike and I wanted someone else to get to have it, but I ended up keeping it and now I'm just waiting for one to come up for sale dirt cheap.

I looked up the "vibra technics predator" and it looks like a nice well built mount, however it is listed for 1999 to 2013 model years, too bad...YD
