Hard finding Neutral - Clutch Adjustment
My '95 FXDWG calls for 890-1065ml (30-36 oz) of oil and I am in that range for sure with HD fluid. Previously using HD fluid and didn't have an issue with finding neutral for the most part hot or cold.
As I just replaced the motor and had primary tore down, I'm assuming the clutch my not be adjusted perfectly.
It will go in and out of neutral like butter cold. Clutch lever free play is 1/16-1/8" which again I believe to be by the book.
Primary chain adjustment, by the book on cold setting, but have not check the 'hot' play yet.
So would you think it loosen or tighten up the play in the clutch to find improvement, or could it improve either way?
If all you say is good, then I would back out the adjuster screw a quarter of a turn. I think the primary chain is checked cold at several positions, and adjusted at the tightest position. Have never checked it hot.
Keep at it, until you get it. Good luck.
- Fill with oil to the correct level, as per your owners or factory service manual, don't just pour in a fixed quantity! The level is there for a jolly good reason.
- When practical engage neutral as you roll to a stop, not after you stop - it's a darned sight easier that way.
- I adjust my cable so there is very little slack at the lever, less than 1/16". It helps a little.
- When the clutch gets hot, such as in heavy traffic, I haven't found any way of engaging neutral, other than pulling over and stopping the engine.
- I have just installed a set of Barnett +1 clutch plates, of which I have heard that miracles can happen, but have yet to ride with them to confirm that. Until them I had my original stock clutch plates.
- In changing plates I discovered that my pressure plate was disintegrating around the C-clip recess, I have no idea what affect that may have had, but now have a new one. Check yours!
- Check if you have a device to reduce lever effort, as they also reduce clutch lift and adversely affect clutch release.
