I recently put this in my 89 FLHTC and am very happy. BTW, the cam in your 89 is an L-cam, so it's one of the better Evo cams. You will feel the difference with EV13, especially more bottom end torque.

Cam, adjustable PRs, lifters will be anywhere $300-$400, but you have to internet shop.

That's exactly the plan! Gaskets over the winter!

There's no reason why you can't do a cam job yourself. Save $$ for the head and cylinder honing, etc... You don't need special tools. I borrowed a blind hole puller and race/seal installer from Autozone. Lots of folks here have experience with cam swap.

Aside from the parts I mentioned, you will need:

1. Cam cover gasket
2. Cam oil seal (might as well change it)
3. Lifter block gaskets
4. O-rings for push rods
5. Cam shim (.055 or .060) will get you in the cam play tolerance.
6. Exhaust gaskets
7. Small bottle of assembly lube (could just use oil)

You don't have to pull the lifter blocks to do the lifters/cam job, unless you just want to swap the gaskets.

I would do the lifters while I was in there. You have the earlier style (like I had), and I had one fail on me at 46,000 miles. As long as you're in there, replace the cam bearing, too. Yes, you have the "good" one, but for about $10, why cheap out on it?

In addition to the cam bearing, I'd also upgrade the breather to the S&S reed valve. And MAW put in a better ignition too.

I love spending other people's money....

At this stage I think asking about which lifter to use a kinda like asking what oil to run.

Just make sure whatever you buy is a big axle lifter and you'll be fine.

Re. Swinging Arm bushes. At 35k I wouldnt think the bushes would need replacing. At 60k+ I replaced the OE bushes with Bronze bushes and a Stabiliser Kit from True-Track. Expensive but recommended by quite a few Forum members. Might be better spending your $s on the other upgrades you are talking about. Bungo
