The cable adjuster will not give a earlier catch point. You have to adjust the clutch behind the derby cover. There is a range and you're on the wrong side of the range. I don't have my manual but I did my clutch and it caught way too early. I redid it and it by adjusting the nut a little more and it is perfect now

On the subject of adjusting a Harley clutch, there's a procedure floating around on the internet called something like: "Hippo's clutch adjustment", or words to that effect. It's slightly different than the 'factory' procedure and works pretty well. Hippo was a Harley 'wrench'; I don't think he's with us anymore (passed).

So why do you feel you need to replace the cable over the winter?

The farther out on the handle it engages the better, when it engages at almost the very end it means you are getting the most throw you can get. Which is a good thing.

1/2 turn just seemed too far for me.when I went a little less than full turn it seemed better for me,about 3" from grip it just starts to grab and then was able to make sure when let out I was fully engaged w/1/8" slack space between handle and cable end. Also when I roll bike back in gear ,clutch in,Im getting less drag .my braided cable is at least 5 yrs .old and coating at ends is ageing. I guess I just would feel better before a longer run knowing I have a new cable that I know how old it actually is. Thanks Mark for info I didn't know that!
