Ok, so 1998 Ultra Classic, I decked the heads .050 added an EV 27 cam, hydraulic lifters, adj. pushrods, ripped out the EFI and put on a Mikuni HSR 42. It runs like a scalded ape, however, it has a clack, clack, clack sound when its running kind of like bad gas pinging. I put it under load, i.e. I held the front brake and let out the clutch slowly and the noise got quieter. I checked the play in the primary chain and it has some tight spots and some loose spots and its adjusted to about 1/2" at its tightest spot. Im so ready to ride this thing but the clacking sound really has me frustrated and worried. BTW 40,000 miles on the counter.
The first step is to localize the sound.
Are you sure it's coming out of the primary??
Fairly certain. We put it under load and it quieted down significantly. We are going to take it apart tonight. The only other thing I can think is possibly bad rockers? Its about the only thing that didnt get addressed in the top end.

There is a lot of distance between the rocker boxes and the primary.
That is why I said the first step is to localize the sound.
It could be something as simple as adding a couple of flats to your pushrod adjustment.
FWIW the tightest part of your primary chain should be no tighter than 5/8th" cold and 3/8th" hot according to the book.
You said you put adjustable pushrods in. How many flats did you lengthen the pushrods from zero lash? Load the lifters....
Your clack could also be a bad Compensator. They are know to get noisy. You obviously have the fsm right?
