Default Pipe Wrench and a pull pipe.

I decided to upgrade my front forks to a ricor Intimidator and a spring swap. The Bike is a 09 Fatboy. All the fork internals are all original. The forks were never opened in the 22 years that owned the bike. It took a 12" pipe wrench and a 3' pull pipe to break the fork caps off. Both of them. The Only thing I glade I did not go on a diet to loose weight. I needed all 250lbs to bust them loose!

Damn. That's sucks. I have had some stubborn ones before. You'll love those intiminators. I'm rebuilding a set of forks literally as we speak

I use a 1 3/8 "GearWrench" to take my fork caps off. I do it every 5,000 miles to change the fork oil. As Mr. Natural sez, "Get the right tool for the job!" Pipe wrenches are for plumbing.

If your fork oil hasn't been changed in 22 years (and just how have you owned an '09 Fatboy for 22 years?), I imagine ANYTHING you did to the front end would HAVE to be an improvement.

I drained the Old fork oil from the drains on the lowers and filled them by removing the top cap. There is no need to remove the forks to do a fluid change.

, plus a pipe wrench squeezes tighter across the contact surface. So, it can crush a hex nut out of shape and weaken it in the future......

That is not what was stuck! The top Cap (bolt) came off with out any issues. I have had the forks off many times and changed the oil often. It is what the top cap screws into that was stuck. That bolts holds the spring in place. That was the bear. and it is not a hex. It's 2 sides flat.
