99 evo timing
Really wish I could answer as many questions as I have asked. I need a little insight first off just got done hanging the 14 inch burly bars which taught me lot about my fatboy. Found the weird sound at idle to be it has a mukini carb and verified so that's out I the way. I had to replace my sensor plate a while back an it is all the way advanced will not go any further I tried to swing it back a little and bike didn't want to start. So I put it back I hear no pinging whatsoever. I also can't find the voes I keep reading about. My idea is the cam gear may be on wrong causing the plate to be all the way advanced to run does that sound right? Can anyone point me in the direction of the voes? Thanks on advance also the bike is hard to start first time of the day but only then could the two be related?

VOES is a black plastic thing with a vacuum pipe and two wires going into it, it will usually sit between the two cylinders on top of the carby manifold.
You do realise that the backplate works backwards don't you? Advance is clockwise on an Evo.
To time it correctly you should use a strobe and a clear plastic timing plug. Time the front cylinder to the single dot, not the twin dots.
Let us know if you find the VOES and what happens when you strobe the timing.

Mike, this sounds silly, but I hope you have a factory service manual you're working from?! Timing your bike and the VOES are both addressed in it. If your bike has an aftermarket ignition system the VOES may have been removed. Spanners points out where it is mounted, it also has a small diameter hose going to it from the inlet manifold.

If you don't have the clear plastic timing bung to go in the timing hole you will need to glad wrap your timing light and wear a mask and eye protection because you'll be sprayed with oil mist and it gets messy
