On the off chance you have Ricor Intiminators, then you need an extremely light oil. If I remember right, it is only 5W.

I have a set that will be going into mine soon, and I remember reading about that when I was researching them.

I just opened the box and they came with one quart of Amsoil Shock Therapy Light #5.

 

Used 10W in my forks and love the ride.

 

Somewhat confusing about people saying remove caps first, there is no choice, and it is just a chrome cap. I'm assuming people mean the plug that is under that, is there a special tool for that or I need to loosen pinch bolt and slide tube down, retighten pinch bolt then remove plug? Book says no spring tension on my model bike when removing plug, softail does.

 

No need to go through all that unless you are rebuilding the forks.

If you're just changing the fork fluid all you have to take off is the caps.

 

I wish it was that simple... you must have missed first post, seals are leaking, probably progressive springs going in...OMG !!!! This **** is the worst smell in the world !!!! The old lady is not happy(garage connected to house)....

 

This socket is expensive (you can probably find it cheaper elsewhere) but with it and a palm ratchet the job is much easier.

So the pinch bolt will not keep tube from spinning, yes I tightened it after lowering but it will mark it all up so out they come. Try vise with soft jaws this week and 13/16" wrench with a persuader bar on it.
Softail tube has cap/plug one piece wg is plug under the cap that you can't get at until the tube is pulled out.

Both my softails have the same setup I saw in your pictures.

 

I was going by what the manual said and shows in pic, but I'll take you're word. Maybe something to do with the years. It also says there is spring pressure on the softail plug but not the wg. I'll be cautious either way when removing
