The oil level in the primary is measured on the jiffy stand, not with bike level, you'll overfill it.

Really? That could be the reason why it took so much! Everything I read said to fill it when level though and the videos I watched showed the bikes on stands.

Crankcase oil and tranny oil with bike level. Primary on stand. You can remove the primary cover and not lose oil. Overfilling could make neutral hard to find too.

Now I'm speaking for my EVO Road King and the FSM Clearly states to have the bike UPRIGHT and LEVEL for the primary oil level. (not in the stand).

I dont have a 1998 manual for a Heritage softail but if i were a betting man i would say it needs to be level also for the primary,

I think its time you slid the FSM out from under the kickstand.

Actually no it's not.
All three fluids are measured with the bike level on a softail.

Not mine. If he fills as high as he was told t will overflow the lower lip on the derby cover when it's on the jiffy stand.

My fsm and owners manual state to check primary fluid level also....... the other two on jiffy stand.

Scott2.0 let me help you spend some money this http://www.harborfreight.com/1800-Lb...ock-61670.html bolted to a piece of plywood is extremely handy when you want / need to work on the bike level.

You do fill it with the bike level.

What year model is your bike??

If I remember right in the early 80's the FSM had you fill to the bottom of the derby cover.
I don't remember if that is with the bike on the stand or level.
It would make more sense if it was on the stand though.
