Default Locking down ape hangers

Got myself a '94 fxsts last fall and I'm having a problem with the ape hangers slipping.

I'm looking at the pros and cons of each method to lock them down. So if you have used any of the above methods let me know how it worked or didn't work for you...

Put a couple of these between the handlebars and risers and it will never move again

What size apes did you get???
I have no problem with my 16"ers on either bike.

I've got set screws on my 12.5" bars. No troubles.

I've got 12" Wild 1 chubby on 6" risers. The chubby has hefty knurling but the risers can't get a grip. Not sure who manufactured the risers.

Personally, I've never had a problem with any of my ape hanger set-ups. The knurling on the bars was enough to hold them tight. My last set of bars were also Wild 1 Chubby's but are 16's on stock 1.5" risers. My suggestion would be to look for another set of risers.

That thought has crossed my mind.

But, if I can solve the problem for $10.00 vs 100.00+ I don't mind doing a modification. I'm leaning towards drilling the top caps, taping them for a set screw, well, more like a chrome bolt set screw type set up.

If it were my bike, I'd start with crafting some aluminum shims out of a beer can. You have to get a good, snug, interference fit between the risers and the bars. They should stay put without the set screws, which I think of more as a backup.

On my FLHTC, the risers aren't visible, so neither are the set screws. I would try the shims first on a bike with exposed risers.

If you put in the lock washers like I suggested then you can fix your problem for 10 cents.

If you put in beer can shims like I suggested you can solve the problem for nothing.
