How do I get the umbrella valves out? Do they just pull out by hand? What's involved in getting the rocker covers off? Do I need to pull the tank or can I cheat and just move it up and out of the way?

It's easier to just remove the tanks. As for the Umbrella valves yea they just pop out by hand.... Where are your breather line coming off of you heads going to? Don't want that **** going back into the motor.... vent it to atmosphere. If you're getting too much crap out of there yea the valves probably will need to be replaced....

In your original post you mentioned a crankcase breather.

Is yours a head breather.. has umbrella valves or a case breather...doesn't have umbrella valves.

Now that you have told us what year the bike is, we can tell you it is a head breather...
I think you are on the right track in thinking about removing the rocker covers and replacing the umbrella valves.

Pull the tank and make the job easier.

The best ones that I've seen/used (umbrella valves) are green ones. I don't know who made them but they are much more durable than the ones in the Cometic kit.... I'll have to call Scott and see where he gets them from....

The "green ones" come from Harley-Davidson. At least that's what they gave me at the dealer when I replaced my breather valves in '12.
