Default Drive belt rubbing sprocket

Happy Sunday!

I've got a little issue. One week ago, the wife said she heard a noise from the rear tire. I didn't hear it and said it was probably the rotor. Yesterday, I did a detail wash of the bike and took it for a spin. I started hearing a rubbing sound when I was slowed down to 15 mph. This morning, I jacked up the bike and found the belt is rubbing the rear sprocket. I checked the belt tension and made sure the rear tire was aligned correctly. The sound is still there. Upon further investigation, parts of the belt are being exposed. I have attached two pictures showing the differences.

Could it be a rear sprocket is not straight? A little silicone almost stops the noise, but I realize that is a temporary fix.
Thanks in advance!

1999 Fatboy. 18700 miles.

Mine does it too, and has for 23 years. The belt squeals against the pulley like a scared pig every time I wash the bike. It goes away once the belt gets a bit dusty. If you can't wait rub a bit of soap or wax on the edge of the belt.

The reason you see the cord showing is that the cord is wrapped in a spiral pattern, and will run out somewhere along the edge. What you have looks perfectly normal to me.

thanks for the reply. Glad I'm not the only one with this issue. Does your belt look similar to mine?

Yes, see my edit above.

Not really an "issue", but you washed the bike and now the belt is "squeaky" clean. The noise will go away when it gets dirty again.

It's perfectly normal for the belt to ride the outside of the pulley flange. Note that there is no inside flange on the front pulley, either.

Default Searching the forums and this was the closest thread to what I have.

Bought a 2012 FLHTK last year with about 20k on it.
About six months ago the inside guide ring on the rear sprocket came off and the belt was rubbing the tire.
So I removed the sprocket and put the ring back on and swagged it in place with multiple pecks from a center punch. Today it came off again.
Last time I checked the alignment between the front and rear wheels and it appeared ok.
Any suggestions on what to look for that would cause the belt to press hard enough to pop the ring off the sprocket?

have you checked the pulley bolts to make sure they're torqued?

Pitpig...I had a narrow pulley made for my V rod to run a skinny belt an to get the rear ring to hold I had it tacked by a pro welder. It was a unique alloy so it takes some work to get right...probably cheaper to buy a used pulley off ebay

No pulley bolts to torque. It has a Isolation drive. Pulley is aluminum and the ring is steel so no go on welding. G
