Default CV Carb loose again!

Hey all. I put my new lifters and pushrods in today (piece of cake!) thanks for all the tips.

When I parked my Evo (1997 flht) in late spring because the lifter noise was getting louder and it just wasn't running right. So I pull the air cleaner to get a better grip on the push rod tubes and the cv falls right off the manifold. This is at least the 6th rubber boot that I have been through. Anyone else have this trouble, or know of a fix? It's about to get tossed and replaced with a Super E

Is the bracket that goes from breather bolt to breather bolt missing? It passes over the front of the carb before the air cleaner goes back on.

Hmmm. I'll have to check that. I should mention that the stock air cleaner is long gone. I am currently running a ness big sucker air cleaner set up.

You need that bracket. The carb isn't bolted on. It's pushed onto the manfold with a rubber boot and if that bracket is in front of it, You wouldn't be able to pull it off, let alone having it fall off.
Click that link I put up... that's the part you need.

The ness big sucker backing plate is one piece. It bolts to the carb and the breather bolts.

As long as it's not leaking, it doesn't matter.

Does the backing plate go snug against the carb When the breather bolts are on? Are there spacers that allow it stick out too far? You might be pulling the carb out from the manifold when you bolt the backing plate back on the carb. Be careful not to tighten the breather bolts too much though.

I'll check it when I put it back together. Seems the the rubber breaks down and it does start to leak.

A plate gets bolted to the carb and that same plate gets bolted to the head using (usually) brackets and sometimes spacers. There are different types of brackets and spacers based on your particular air cleaner and backing plate setup, but the concept is the same for all the different types.

Carb is bolted to plate, plate then gets bolted to brackets. the brackets should already be bolted and aligned to and with the holes in the head. Spacers as needed to prevent carb from being pushed in or pulled away from its seal too much.

Alignment is important to keep the intake manifold and seals in proper position along with the manifold to carb seal so neither the manifold or carb is cocked or torqued out of alignment which will create leaks. YD
