The surface looked good and I see no reason to use it.
So far I have used Cometic SLS and MLS base and head gaskets without copper coat and they sealed up great.

THC is there any down side to using it? A little extra insurance surely can't hurt right? Im only refering to the SLS base gasket

A couple possible down sides is you get too much on the surface and a bit could either partially block or totally block that oil passage.
The other off the top of my head is it will be harder to clean the surfaces if you have to do the job again.

I'm a firm believer in the KISS theory.

All that said its your bike do what you want.
Unless the gasket surface was mess up in some small way I wouldn't.

FWIW a friend of mine had his top end done by a shop and the base gasket wept from day one.
I went and replaced the top end gaskets with SLS and MLS Cometic gaskets and the weep is gone and has stayed dry for the last 5 years.

There's a right way and a wrong way to use it, Tex mentioned the wrong way,
I use it unless I'm dealing with fresh machined or near perfect surfaces, then it still wouldn't hurt if you don't slop it on.

Clean the surfaces dry and oil free with brake cleaner,
have something to hang the gasket on before spraying,
spray the gasket with thin coats just enough to cover,
let it dry about 10-15 minutes, depending how thick you sprayed it,
assemble,
use brake cleaner sprayed on a rag to wipe off the copper coat that's visible around the gasket area, wipes right off.
