Default Looking at a 1984 Tourglide.

G'day all.
I havn't been here for a while as I sold my 91 Heritage 2 yrs ago and bought a Switchback.
Now I do love the Switchback but I miss my Evo, I have owned 2 over the yrs and I have started to look at another.

A 1984 Tourglide is for sale here in Australia, price is good for Aussie standards and it "looks" the goods, she has 60,000 Km's on the clock and to me anyway it look pretty complete and as she came from the factory.
Being the 1st yr of the Evo and Shovel lower end as they were, are there any major pitfalls for these bikes, I know it's a long bow to draw but a heads up on anything to look for or change will give me better buying power and a rough idea of future dollare outlay.
I am pretty good around the workshop, can and have worked on all my HD's in the last 33yrs, would only see shop if machining needs doing.
I have not seen the bike in person, just on the for sale adds.

Cheers for any help.
Dave

Hmmm that's about 37K miles. Not too bad if it's been maintained and those are open road miles. Should be halfway through it life - lots of life left in it. My bud has a '87 like that and it started knocking and clacking at (i think it was) 80K miles, but he used to thrash it and really load it down.

Check the front motor mount rubber. They tend to crack apart as they get old. Same for the rear 2 on the swingarm but they are impossible to check without major surgery. I'd look over the belt, too, for cracks/holes/fraying. That year had the bad starter relay and the bad voltage regulator - check 'em out. The Keihin stinks, plan on putting on an S&S right off - why fight it.

Cosmetically the plastic window over the instruments is probably cloudy, and the seat and stuff may be worn, but all of this can be replaced. get a Tedd's Vtwin catalog for all the incidental little nitshit stuff. It was a cool bike in it's day - the king of the road.

I had a '85 FXRT with that same motor and it was bulletproof. I say go for it - it will make a cool ride it you keep it stock and dont go overboard with mods.

Yeah I did lifters at 75,000Km's on my 1st Evo, did cam and bearings whilst in there. Asking $9,500 Aus dollars, but I would talk him down of course.

Thanks mate.
Sounds like the basic stuff for and older evo which is good.
Replaced all the mounts on my evo electroglide when I had her and fitted a SU to my Heritage. Mmmmm..this all sounds pretty good so far.

84 should be an enclosed chain not a belt drive. I own a85 Flhtc with over 100k miles. Original bottom end but came etc have been changed out. Also added a CV carb. One weak link is the pawl and throw out bearing in the tranny that releases the clutch. Also saddle bag parts are hard to come by

The 84's had shovel case castings machined for EVO top end, and the shovel crank...bulletproof right out of the box...they only had problems when they tried to make the cases and crank cheaper in later years...mid to late 80's
