96 Heritage Speedometer issue.

96 Heritage Speedometer issue.
I posted this in a different spot and someone recommended I post it here.
Hi, I just picked up a 96 Heritage Nostalgia from my Step dad. It was my step brother’s bike unfortunately he passed away last year. I’m bringing it to a shop tomorrow to get a service, new tires and a look over.
one issue I know of is the LCD millage part of the speedo is a messed up so can’t see the correct millage. Can I just buy a new one in and plug it in and will show millage or do I need to contact Harley? I’ve seen videos online that show people just swapping Speedo out with aftermarket ones but they are newer bikes. And info would be great. Thanks.

If it is the factory speedometer with the LCD odometer display then you are probably describing the LCD leak.
Some units have a few dark specs while other have what looks like an ink blot area that covers a significant portion of the LCD odometer display.
If you google images then you will probably find some that look like yours.
The actual speedometer is NOT plug and play for that era.
It has about 12 wires that are hard wired.
The mileage shown by odometer is stored in the actual speedometer for that era.
Again, your unit is not plug and play.
It is different from the units with the plug in the back.
The mileage is in the speedometer only.
There are update replacement options but they require a wire harness purchase and you need to decide if mileage reinstatement is required.
