You lean the bike way over on the kickstand, slide the milk crate under the high side of the frame, push the bike back upright and slide it on the crate. Man, don't they teach people anything in school anymore?

Well, I bought the Harbor Freight lift, so we'll see how it goes.

I know, but Shakespeare wouldn't have understood that.

Well, the lift works and it's pretty easy. Now to prep the patient.

My camera sucks, but....

Okay, the problem is identified. I unscrewed the cable from the speedo, then watched it as I spun the front wheel. No action. Then I decided that, since the ends were so close, I would actually hold the upper side of the cable while I spun the wheel. Guess what? About half of the cable came right up out of there in my hand.

So, I'll get a new cable on the way.

By the way.... it might be too early to tell for sure, but I swear it looks like there's enough gap so that I won't have to drop the left side tank. I'll know for sure when I try to drop it through the opening.

Just ordered the cable from Amazon as recommended by TexasHillCountry.

If you can do it without dropping a tank then you're better'n me.
I'd scratch the hell out of tanks if I tried that.

Oh and I put a small zip tie just behind the speedometer side of the cable to keep the threaded cup close to the end.

Thanks for the tip.

The cable is removed. I'm thinking that the area between the left tank and the frame must be a little "busier" on your bike than mine. Maybe you have more wires there or something? Mine slipped out easily once I pushed it toward the front of the bike. Whew! I wasn't looking forward to a gas smell in the garage.

Either way, thanks to everyone for your advice. It's going to be pure torture waiting for this cable, but I wasn't going to pay an extra $28.00 to get it here sooner.

True, but I won't for two reasons. One, I want my mileage pretty accurate for maintenance intervals, and two, I use the trip odo to give me a good idea of when I need to gas up. I know I have the Reserve, but still....

Update: I just won the auction for the service manual on eBay posted above.

The cable arrived today. I installed it and all is well.

That is, except for one thing..... I thought that the little rubber dust boot on the wheel end came with the cable. Apparently not, and I had already tossed the old one.

Oh, well. I'll run it this way and if it were to crap out prematurely, I'll replace it and the boot next time.

i used some shrink tube for electric wires on my cable and drive. get some that's big enough and heat it up. it shrinks to the perfect size.

That self fusing tape stuff is pretty good too. Also, make sure you routed it so that all the bends have the largest radius possible.

Yeah. I'm touchy about having no sharp turns in a cable.

If you’d have bought the genuine HD cable the boot would have come with the cable.
