I might look into this idea.

To use baggas idea you have to pull the 2 small circlips holding the mounting pins for the speedo and pull the speedo up so you can unscrew the cable.
Those 2 circlips are gonna be a PITA to remove and replace with the tanks in place.

I can't tell you how much I recommend getting that inline cutoff that I posted earlier.
If you do that you never have to drain your tanks before taking them off again.

You will have to run the crossover tube in front of the frame but that won't hurt anything.

Spinning the wheel does same thing, better than riding with half tank.

Without a jack the OP is gonna have a hard time spinning that front wheel.

Honestly, I don't anticipate having to pull/drain the tanks very often, but it otherwise looks like a great idea.

I'm going to see if my local dealer has the service manual for my bike when they open in a bit. I know it'll cost more than eBay, but if I'm going to tackle this problem today.....

Yeah. The wheel chock grips, well, the front wheel!

It actually makes me wonder, though, if I could put the rear wheel in the chock and lift the bike slightly with a floor jack.

I just called the local Harley dealer. They have neither the manual or the speedo cable in stock.

I'm shocked! Shocked, I say!

Not.

This would be a better cable than OEM.

This is not the time to cut corners or improvise.

You're either going to start doing your own work, or you're not. If you are, you're going to need a proper motorcycle jack.

That one doesn't fit my bike, but J&P Cycle has several that do for similar prices.

I'll pick up a jack at some point, but I have limited space in the garage right now. The chock has served me well for most things.

In the meantime for this particular problem, there's a local indy shop that can possibly put it on a lift and determine if the cable is the problem or not. If it is, I'll do the replacement myself.

By the time you pay them to find if the cable is the problem you might as well just pay them to replace it as it's gonna cost about the same either way.

They contradict themselves. At the bottom it has the info you posted and I saw that, but look at the top:

Yeah, that makes sense. I called the local Harbor Freight and they have the lift in stock, so I'll probably pick one up today.
