I purchased my 96 Fatboy in November. The previous owner had put 1k miles in 10 years. I had oil changed and started riding. After about 4 months I lost rear cylinder. I disassembled and top end redone.
Here are the stats: 97 CI S&S with Axtell cylinders and 3-13/16 JE Pistons. WB9 cam, STD oval port heads with pro geometry. 2.25 Intake valve and 1.95 exhaust valve. Well the cylinders were bored +.020.
I reassembled and screwed up due to other things going on. Relocated to California and had a blown head gasket. As well as destroying my rotor and stator.
Took to local shop. They stated need new pistons and rings so I ordered at +.030 direct from Axtell. They supposedly bored and honed cylinders and installed new pistons and rings. I picked the bike up and within a day noticed a ton of white smoke when I started it. I then rode about 120 miles and has burned about 1-1/2 quarts of oil. Called the shop that did the work and they started was probably a knicked valve seal.
I called gentleman who did original work and he stated they either installed rings upside down or broke one. Well about a week later I now noticed oil coming from both front and rear at head gaskets.
What could be causing oil consumption.

Reason: Spelling and grammar
1, Axtell has a VERY specific break in pattern.
Did they gap the rings? too tight? (broken)
Upside dwn rings?
Valve stem seals?
If they fixed it, what is their warranty?
That's what I said. Im not sure what they did. Rings look to be in the right way. I dont think they flycut the relief pockets in the pistons deep enough. There is a piece of rear piston missing and the exhaust side is scored pretty deep.
The front cylinder had 1 loose head bolt. On that piston you can see where the intake valve was making contact with the piston. It is deeply scored on intake side. Both cylinders will need to bored yet again.
. The shop is closed today so I will be calling tomorrow. I'm stuck in the mountains until I can get fixed. I'm sure they will try to find every way possible to lay blame somewhere else.
It appears the shop neglected to "check all clearances". W9B is a high lift cam & those monster valves in the STD heads introduce valve to valve & piston to valve clearance issues. No easy job & you just can't ignore details when setting up a combination like this. Hope you get it worked out, OP.
