Anyone repack their Screamin Eagle (Cycle Shack) slip on's? Mine were making some rattling noise, on the bagger, a while back, so I took the baffles out and "adjusted" the flange. At this time, I thought it would be a good idea to remove the packing sleeves.. Well, since going to a Paugho true dual, its louder than I care for and am considering repacking. I'm not finding any actual replacements available. So, I've never done it, but it seems like many different materials would work. Any suggestions on what to do, or not to do?

 

I've used a muffler packing kit off Ebay that contains a thick fiberglass type mat and stainless wire to hold it spot, it works but gets loud again. Also did my Dragula's with packing and starting to get that tinny sound again after 2 years, Frank Drago's who sells the Dragula's showed a trick where they started using header heat wrap and uses it on the baffle instead of packing, he spoke of starting with 2 layers of wrap and see where the exhaust tone it at. Positives is the tape will never burn out like packing and can control sound and back pressure by numbers of layers install, going to most likely try it shortly with heavy riding season approaching. Negatives is costs more than a packing kit but should be worth it if your never have to pack the muffler again.

 

1997bagger do you know if you need to wet the exhaust tape first when putting it on the baffle like that? I always soak the tape first in water and then let it dry in the sun before running the bike when using it the normal way.

 

I have used stove rope for serval years on baffles where it would fit. You do have to figure out the thickness you can use as well as the length needed.

It can get pricey but with some cking around got some decent deals on some.

Interesting ideas, got a big ride coming up soon to finish my lower 48 bucket list... so I'll be giving something a try in the next 2wks.. seems like the wrap would work similar to the rope, but would need more layers.. never would have thought of either, but will definitely consider them now.. I've noticed some places sell a steel wool type of packing, any thoughts or experience?
