Time for a new clutch in my '96 heritage and this is going to be my cherry so I got a few questions.
Looking at clutches is kinda confusing, some say "extra plate kit" do I need this extra plate?
The Barnett clutches that I'm interested in, part no. 306-30-20016 shows with 5 springs and without springs, I'm assuming that since my fsm doesn't show these springs that I don't need them, is this correct?
Some kits that I have looked at have a diaphragm spring some don't, do I need to replace this spring? How can I tell?
Should I get a new pressure plate or how do I check mine to know that it is good?
Sorry for what I feel are dumb questions but this my first attempt at a clutch job and had rather ask "dumb" questions now than screw up during the job.
I put a barnett extra plate clutch in all my rides. Like has been stated- it replaces the spring plate in the clutchpac with another friction plate. Gives a little extra clamping power. Installs like stock.
Yeah, I have had shifting issues for a while now and after only a few hundred miles after the stator repair I went in to adjust the clutch and realized the oil level was a little higher than the fsm suggested so I drained to refill to correct level.
Pulling the drain plug out of the primary there seemed to be a lot of gray gunk on it no longer than it had been run since stator was put in and further inspection showed what I thought to be a rather large "flake" that I'm pretty sure was friction material from the clutch so I've decided to put a clutch in.
I had someone helping me button things up after the stator job and wasn't paying as close attention as I should have been. I suspect that's the reason for the high fluid level.
So with all the grey gunk + the flake I hope I'm on the right track to solving the shifting issues.
Any thoughts on whether I should go ahead and replace the pressure plate or not?
The 'plus 1' kit is a direct replacement and a Barnett set is popular and widely creditted with improving gear changes. Check their website, where you can read the installation instructions. I found, when installing mine, that my pressure plate was showing signs of distress, so also replaced that. Do check yours, if you go down that route - the grove in which the large circlip fits had lost a few bits on mine.
I put the Barnett extra plate clutch kit in my 96 Road King a little over a year ago because my spring plate exploded. They'll do that you know? 307-30-20011 Extra Plate Clutch Kit- Carbon Fiber
I don't know what the Kevlar kit goes for, but the carbon fiber kit was a little over $200
