Don't know what bike you have, but on my '96 Heritage, the left tank cap is "reverse threaded". You have to turn it clockwise to take it off.

Edit: Doh! Maybe I should have taken a gander at your username to get an idea of what bike you have.

'95 and older bikes are the same way.

As far as I know, any bike with two gas caps, the left cap is left hand thread.'Turn Clockwise to remove'.This is because the right cap is vented, the left cap is not.A vented cap on the left, with a full tank, would leak when the bike is leaned on the kickstand.[not including newer bike with a fuel gauge in the left hole]

Drain out the gas, remove the tank and put it in the freezer for two or three hours. Cap will come right off. If it doesn't try using a large pair of channel locks.

Place a rag over cap to protect it and the paint, use channel locks or a small pipe wrench, clock wise.

Knipex makes a nice pair of pliers wrench that are non-marring (won't damage or mark). However, they can get pricey in larger sizes.
